Since her childhood in Cleveland Ohio, tattoos have played a key role in Eva Phoenix's life, from the age of 6 when she started drawing tattoos on family friends.
She was encouraged by her Grandma into taking art lessons with a local Hungarian immigrant and fine artist, Esther Ratoni-Nagy. An artist from an early age, Eva completed her first oil paintings as an 8 year old, competing against adults and winning in local county fair art competitions.
In her teens, she discovered tattooing and was engaged by the vivid colors and vibrant quality of the medium. While living in Houston, Texas in 1981, she was given the opportunity to learn the tricks of the tattoo trade. Since then, she has left her mark on people from all over the planet. After working as a full-time tattoo artist for over 25 years, Eva found herself frustrated by her lack of time and energy for her true passion: painting.
In 2005 she made the decision with her family to change their lifestyle. They sold everything and moved to Amsterdam Netherlands. The people she meets along the way form much of the inspiration for her art, as does her history and love of tattoos.
Her husband Jonathan and she are now the European distributors for Industrial Strength Professional Body Jewelry doing business as Industrial Strength International. She spends a lot of time administrating for ISI, but now she can devote more time focusing on painting, her true love.
Eva now works primarily in acrylic on canvas and still does the occasional tattoo for close friends. Her paintings are playful in nature, often described as classic carnival-style pin-ups.
Eva’s art has been featured in local tattoo exhibitions, displayed in tattoo parlors and in private collections.
